Reading Goal Calculator
Whether aiming for 12, 24, or 52 books this year, calculate the exact daily pages and reading minutes you need to stay on track.
Standard novels range from 300 to 350 pages.
Average adult pace is ~40 pages/hr (~250 words per minute).
Break It Down Into Micro-Habits
Reading 24 books a year equals just 20 to 25 minutes of reading per day. Read 10 minutes with morning coffee and 15 minutes before sleep.
Account For Page Variations
A 700-page historical epic requires more than triple the time of a concise 200-page novella. Track pages alongside titles for balanced perspective.
Zero Pressure Sanctuary
Reading is an internal journey. FreeReadingTracker has no follower leaderboards or social vanity — just your personal reading rhythm.
How the Reading Goal Calculation Works
Our calculator turns an abstract annual book goal into practical, bite-sized daily habits using transparent math:
Goal × Avg Pages
e.g. 24 × 320 = 7,680 pagesTotal Pages ÷ 365
e.g. 7,680 ÷ 365 = 21 pages/day(Pages ÷ PPH) × 60
e.g. (21 ÷ 40) × 60 = 32 minsGoal ÷ 12
e.g. 24 ÷ 12 = 2.0 books/monthFrequently Asked Questions
How do I calculate a yearly reading goal?
Multiply your target number of books by your estimated average pages per book to determine your total yearly page count. Then divide by 365 to find your required pages per day. Finally, divide daily pages by your reading speed (pages per hour) and multiply by 60 to find your daily reading minutes.
How many books should I read in a year?
There is no universal standard. Setting a goal of 12 books per year (1 book a month) requires only 15 to 20 minutes of reading a day. An ambitious goal of 24 books per year (2 per month) requires roughly 30 minutes daily. Choose a goal that fits your existing lifestyle rather than comparing yourself to others.
How many books per month do I need to reach my goal?
Divide your total annual target by 12. For example, a 12-book goal requires exactly 1 book per month; a 24-book goal requires 2 books per month; and a 52-book goal requires 4.3 books per month (roughly 1 book per week).
What if I miss my reading target for a month?
Missing a month is completely normal during busy periods. Simply adjust your remaining goal or recalculate your daily target using our Pages Per Day Calculator. You can also redistribute the remaining pages across future months without feeling behind.
Can I use a reading goal based on pages instead of books?
Yes, tracking pages is often a more balanced metric than tracking book count because it treats a 700-page fantasy novel fairly compared to a 180-page novella. If you prefer a day-by-day reading timetable, you can build a reading schedule that aligns with your specific routine.
