How many pages should I read a day?
The ideal number of pages to read each day depends on your book's total length, your deadline, how many days a week you can read, your personal reading speed, and habit consistency. For general reading pleasure without impending deadlines, 20 to 30 pages per day (roughly 20 to 35 minutes of reading) is a sustainable target that finishes 2 to 3 full books every month.
1. Target Deadline
A tight deadline (e.g. 7 days) requires a higher daily pace, while a relaxed 30-day window keeps the daily commitment small and easy to maintain.
2. Available Reading Days
If you only read on weekdays (5 days/week) or weekends, your active daily pages need to be higher to compensate for rest days.
3. Personal Reading Speed
At an average pace of ~40 pages per hour (250 WPM), 20 pages takes ~30 minutes. Slower, contemplative reading may require 45 minutes for the same pages.
Suppose you are reading a 320-page book, have already finished 80 pages (240 pages remaining), and want to finish in 12 days:
Life happens. When you miss a scheduled reading day:
- Remaining pages stay unchanged while your remaining calendar days decrease.
- The required daily page count increases to redistribute the unread pages across fewer remaining days.
- For instance, if you had 240 pages left over 12 days (20 pages/day) and miss 2 days, you now have 240 pages over 10 days, increasing the target pace to 24 pages per day.
If your schedule varies week to week, you can build a reading schedule that automatically skips rest days, plan a library loan before due dates, or pace your book club reading ahead of your next meeting.
How We Calculate Pages Per Day
All calculations are 100% transparent and execute privately in your browser. We intentionally round daily page counts up to the nearest whole page so you always finish on or before your target date.
Total Pages - Pages Read
e.g. 400 - 100 = 300 pagesTarget Date - Today
e.g. Sep 30 - Sep 15 = 15 days⌈Remaining ÷ Days⌉
e.g. 300 ÷ 15 = 20 pages/day(Pages × WPP) ÷ WPM
e.g. (20 × 250) ÷ 250 = 20 minsPages Per Day Needed by Book Length & Timeline
